Claim: Nawaz Sharif’s mother Shamim Akhtar was an MPA in Punjab Assembly till 2018, when she was 91 years old.
Fact: MPA Shamim Akhtar is a 67 year old woman, e and her husband’s name is Muhammad Kabir Ahmed.
On 22 Feb 2021 Twitter account Major Muhammad Arif (Retd) posted a tweet saying: “[Translation] Maryam Nawaz’s grandmother, Nawaz sharif and Shahbaz Sharif’s mother Shamim Akhtar was an MPA during PMLN’s government from 2013 to 2018. She also received the requisite salary and the associated benefits. During this time she was 91 years old and did not attend even a single meeting.”
The tweet implies that Nawaz Sharif’s mother, Shamim Akhtar was the Member of the Punjab Assembly from 2013 and 2018.
Basic Fact Check found this to be false. Although there was an MPA in the Punjab Assembly in the time period 2013 to 2018 named Shamim Akhtar, she is not Nawaz Sharif’s mother.
On the official website of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab, a members’ directory is available with names, contact information and political party affiliation of past members from 2002 till date. In the 2013-2018 tenure, a member with the name Shamim Akhtar Is listed and she was elected on one of the reserved seats for women. She is affiliated with PMLN and her husband’s name is Muhammad Kabir Ahmed.
It is also mentioned that she only has one child, and was born in 1954 which makes her 59 years old in 2013. Nawaz Sharif’s mother Shamim Akhtar was 86 years old in that time.

MPA Shamim Akhtar’s husband Muhammad Kabir Ahmed was reported to be found dead in their house in Lahore in November 2014. Their neighbor was nominated in the FIR and the body was deposited at Mayo Hospital for a postmortem.
From the given information it is clear that Nawaz Sharif’s mother Begum Shamim Akhtar is not the woman who was elected in 2013 on a seat reserved for women in the Punjab Assembly.
